The Ups and Downs of Artistic Collaboration

Today in AWL: RR7 "Collaboration"

You see above a photograph of two of the most influential American artists of the post-war period: Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. They worked together for a brief time and made some work that many people love, but the critics didn't look too favorably on it.

Over the last two weeks in FYE we looked at the idea of collaboration through the work of William Kentridge and his team of fellow artists, and we also watched the video on Black Mountain College.

In AWL today, we're going to work on the brief essay that's due tonight. Here's how it's going to work.

1. I'll introduce the assignment a few minutes after class starts at 10:50. From 11:00 to 11:50, each student will be writing or revising their reflective essay on their own. After completing the brief essay, each student will cut-and-paste their writing in an email message addressed to me at csmith@dcad.edu. You must do this before 11:55.

2. Rejoin the Zoom conference (same Zoom room) at noon. I think it's easiest just to leave it open. We will finish class with an informal critique. Be brave and volunteer to have your writing reviewed. It's ok if there are mistakes; that's why we're doing this.

3. Make sure your brief essay has at least two paragraphs consisting of at least 12 sentences altogether. The last sentence of your first paragraph should state the main idea of your reflection in clear and simple writing. In the second paragraph go into specific detail about your main idea. Use examples from your real life. You might be on a roll and end up with 20 sentences. That's ok. Count the sentences, not the words.

4. Edit and proofread your brief essay before emailing it to me.

5. After class is finished, make some final changes/fixes and upload it to the FY Populi page. Voila, you're finished.

6. Questions? Send me an email message at csmith@dcad.edu or speak up on Zoom. I'll leave it open.

==> WRITE: Reflection on Artistic Collaboration (RR7)

Consider what you learned over the past two weeks about creative collaboration and shared experience.  In what ways did your understanding or appreciation of collaborative art change or evolve? Think about the possibility that you may be asked to collaborate on creative endeavors in the future.  What type of project do you envision yourself working on?

Formatting requirements:

  • 200-250 words
  • paragraph form
  • complete sentences
  • proper spelling and grammar

SUBMIT: RR7: Reflection on Artistic Collaboration due no later than 7:00 pm, next Tuesday, 10/20.
